The basics shown in the following pages center around the longsword techniques attributed to Johannes Liechtenauer, a 14th century German master. His teachings were set down in verses, perhaps by him or his students. The verses, known as merkaverse, appear in several manuscripts of later dates beginning as early as 1389. The concepts in these verses become the foundation for the German style of two-handed sword fighting for almost two hundred years.
